US CPSC Voluntary Recall of Curtain Made in Mexico in China

A few days ago, the CPSC and Smith+Noble jointly announced the voluntary recall of Roman blinds and roller blinds from China, Mexico, and the United States. The recalled merchandise includes all custom Roman shades and all blinds that are not equipped with tensioners. The number is about 1.3 million. Since December 2009, CPSC has recalled tens of millions of Roman curtains and roller blinds.

The reason for the recall was that the roman blind had a built-in rope. When the child placed his neck between the drawstring and the CURTAIN or wrapped the rope around the neck, he could easily cause a risk of neck snagging; if the rope of the roller blind was not fixed to the wall On the child's neck, there is also the risk of neck retraction. The CPSC reminded consumers to stop using these two types of curtains immediately and contacted the curtain safety committee to arrange for a free overhaul and check the curtains to determine if they were equipped with tensioners.

It is reported that CHILDREN suffocate death or serious injuries due to curtain pull ropes. In the United States, a CPSC staff survey found that since 1999, 120 deaths and 113 non-fatal accidents have been linked to curtain pulls. The Canadian Ministry of Health has reported 28 deaths and 23 beleagues caused by blind ropes since 1986. In 2002, a total of 90 children in 7 countries in the European Union were rushed into the city because of injury caused by curtain pull ropes. Since 2008, at least 6 people in Europe have died from curtain pull. To this end, the recent US Consumer Product Safety Commission, the Canadian Ministry of Health, and the European Commission’s Department of Health and Consumer Protection have jointly called for manufacturers and standards organizations to establish mandatory international safety standards for curtains, which represents the first of 29 institutions in 29 countries. The sub-union strongly urges the development of mandatory safety standards for a specific product.

Ningbo has always been a curtain and curtain export port. In the first half of 2010, Ningbo exported curtains and other textile products amounting to US$69 million. The functions of curtains have evolved from simple obstruction functions to decoration, beautification, thermal insulation, heat insulation and radiation protection. For a variety of functions, curtains range from traditional fabric curtains to modern shutters, Roman shades, and roller blinds. However, the damage caused to children by curtain pulls is often overlooked. Therefore, the inspection and quarantine department reminded relevant curtain manufacturers that they should raise their awareness of the negative impact on curtain pull ropes, produce curtains strictly in accordance with the relevant standards, and actively carry out technical research and product improvement to avoid the use of pull cords in curtains. There must be fixed and tensioning devices. It is also reminded that families with young children should install safety devices that can eliminate the use of pull cords or reduce the use of pull cords, ensure that there are no child-friendly ropes on the front, sides, and back of the curtains, and that cordless curtains should be installed in children's bedrooms and sleeping areas. To prevent child accidents from accidents.
