Waterproof fabric made of silicon nano material

Nanotechnology makes everything possible, one of which is the waterproof nano-structured material developed by the Institute of Physical Chemistry of the University of Zurich.

As the basic raw material for textiles, the silicone is placed in a container together with other materials to react under certain humidity conditions. The silicon nanostructure can form a firm and effective bond on the surface of the material. After one hour, the surface of the fiber formed a 10~15nm thick interlaced network structure composed of nanofilaments, in which air is stored to prevent the entry of liquids (such as water, acid, alkali or solvent), thereby acting as a water repellent effect. It does not have any negative effect on the performance of the textile, and the fabric can maintain moisture permeability and softness. Experiments have shown that this water-repellent effect can be maintained for one year, even in the case of textile wear and tear, and the water-repellent effect is only weakened by the action of strong alkaline detergent.

After the water-repellent finishing of the warp-knitted elastic fabric, it can be used to produce a waterproof sportswear or a swimsuit. Wearing a swimsuit that is not wet can provide comfort and good health. This super water-repellent textile can also reduce the coefficient of friction in water and can be used as a coating material for the hull to save fuel.

Silicon nano-molecular structures can also absorb other molecular components and therefore have more potential uses, including lipophilic, oil-repellent or hydrophilic treatments. It is believed that as the research progresses, it will open up more application fields for textiles, and more functional warp knits will be born.
